May Rae had the most amazing knack. Virtually every time one of her three kids came for a visit she would send us home with a box of mementos from our childhood. Even now after her three children visiting her on Monday, we all came away with more boxes. Somehow she managed to keep stuff for 60 years. Where did she keep it? And apparently we have carried it from house to house as they moved over the years. There were cricket balls from the Dovercourt Cricket Club from when Dad used to play. But the last time he put on the cricket whites was in 1966, so not sure how the balls survived all the moves, but somehow they did. We found the card table she used with the Lagos Lassies Euchre Club back in the 50’s. We found knitting needles and patterns that went back 60 years because she loved to surprise people with knitted sweaters and even recently finished a baby blanket for her tenth great grandchild. We also found reminders of their many years as golfers at the Board of Trade.
She was born Violet May Jordan in 1930. Born in Canada she moved to England as a young girl. She was big sister to Kathy (George) and Pat and after their Dad was killed in Liverpool during the war, she had two more sisters Margaret (Chris) and Linda from her second family, the Potters after returning to Canada.
May loved to tell of the 18 year old May Jordan who worked as a clerk at Canadian Liquidair. It was love at first sight when she met Bob Rae, who was in sales there after he returned from the war. May won Bob’s heart and after dating for almost 4 years they married in 1952. May loved Bob so much and it’s a love that endured 56 years of marriage and continues now that she has rejoined Bob for eternity, which was her end game all along. May loved her family which they started when Steve was born in 1955, grew it with another son, Ken, a couple of years later and topped off their family in a few years with a daughter, Joanne. The Stratford Rae’s, Steve and Carolyn, have two of May’s Grandchildren, Kelsey and Graham. The Colorado Rae’s, Ken and Kathy, have four more grandchildren, Krysha (who was May’s first grandchild), Adam, Kayla and Kenna. The Colorado bunch are responsible for all 10 great grandkids. The Schomberg Teixeira-Rae's, Joanne have May’s youngest granddaughters Rae Ann and Emily.
As many of the family and friends as possible will gather at the Taylor Funeral Home, 524 Davis Drive Newmarket on Friday from 6-9pm to receive memories of May followed by the funeral on Saturday morning at 11am, also at Taylors.
Many of the mementos that May had a knack for keeping, came from a life lived on Lagos Road in Rexdale, and her favourite place, the Muskokas. Next followed a variety of homes in Etobicoke, before moving to Tottenham, then Briar Hill in Alliston which is where she lost Bob seven years ago, followed by her final move 2 years ago to Newmarket where she was loved by all in The Renoir and where she developed a grand friendship with Heidi Bruhl. She is remembered by long time friends, the Scotlands, and Claytons next door neighbours from Rexdale days, Rose Jevons, also from Rexdale, and members of the Jordan family.
May was one of the sweetest people you ever could have known and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Her favourite saying was, “It’s getting brighter.” And it’s brighter where she is.
In lieu of flowers we would ask donations be made to Sleeping Children around the World or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
