Thelma Mary Kay (née Wingert)

April 20, 1941 - November 27, 2016

Thelma died peacefully but unexpectedly at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario, surrounded by her family. Her children Katherine (Michael Meltzer), Patricia (Michael Schlesinger), and Shawn (Luanne), and grandchildren Cole, Alannah, Marisa, Zane, Shawn and Aaron, are left a legacy of love, learning and laughter. Thelma was born to Mary and Charles Wingert just outside Englefeld, Saskatchewan, where she also lived for several years with the Nordick family (Mary and Leo). Her brother Ken (Roberta), and Mary Nordick and Nordick siblings are thinking fondly of her at this time. Our mom lived in a host of places, including Weyburn, Saskatchewan; Manchester, England; Winnipeg; Dollard-des-Ormeaux (Montreal); and Schomberg and Newmarket, Ontario. Throughout her life, Thelma touched many people with her work in a wide variety of health care positions, including as a psychiatric nurse, Lamaze teacher, midwife, head nurse at the Alexandra Pavillion of the Montreal Sick Children’s Hospital, family life educator, special needs support worker and therapist. Quick with a joke or (sometimes off-colour) comment, imbued with a love of music and children, and with a deep spirituality, Thelma taught her kids they could do anything they set their minds to, and should speak their minds, especially in the face of injustice.

Our family sends their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at the Southlake ICU, the team at Eagle Terrace and her caregivers, especially Cindy. Visitation on Thursday, December 1, 7 to 9 pm and funeral on Friday, December 2 at noon, both at the Taylor Funeral Home at 524 Davis Drive, Newmarket, 905-898-2100; reception to follow at family home (details available). If you wish, donations in Thelma’s memory could be made to the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund ( http://musictherapytrust.ca/supporters/ ) or to your local SPCA, or to a charity of your choice.
