Peggy passed away peacefully at the Newmarket Health Centre on Nov. 21st having celebrated her 100th birthday last June. Born in Schreiber, Ontario to Kate Depew and William Hawke, she was nicknamed "Peggy" after the popular song "Peg O My Heart". Peggy grew up in Sudbury with her six siblings. Always athletic she was proud to win the senior girls athletic award. She took a secretarial course and later became a dental assistant. In 1937 she married Murph Chamberlain, a professional hockey player with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Her two children were born in Toronto before the family moved on to Montreal where Murph joined Les Canadiens. In 1949 they moved to a farm at St. Sebastian, Quebec where Murph combined raising Holstein cattle and coaching hockey. This took the family to many Canadian cities. Moving to Ontario they started a successful distribution company called the Paperman Limited and settled on another farm near Ingersoll. After Murph's passing, Peggy lived in Ingersoll and the “Soo” before coming to Newmarket. Through all this, Peg's constant place was her cabin in White River where, with extended family she picked blueberries, canoed, fished, swam and treated us to her wonderful cooking. Peggy will be sadly missed by her son Peter (Charlene), her daughter Gail Boire, her 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and her extended family.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers at Newmarket Health Centre who so lovingly cared for Peggy in the last years of her life.
A Celebration of her Life will take place at Taylor Funeral Home, 524 Davis Drive, Newmarket on Sunday, Nov. 27 with Visitation from 12:00 to 1:00, Service at 1:00 and reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Memory of Peggy may be made to the Alzheimer Society.
